France expands geothermal energy

Presently only 1 % of the total heat consumption in France is taken out of the ground. However, as the country is located on warm soil layers, a plan has now been passed to accelerate the development of this technology. During the so-called Celsius Campus in Clamart, the kick-off of this project has been announced by Mrs Pannier-Duracher (French environment minister) and Mr Bayrou, (head of the planning commission).

The following was agreed:
•    doubling surface geothermal energy by 2025
•    foundation of a training center where 7,000 drillers shall be trained by 2030
•    promotion of geothermal energy in overseas France and Corsica

During the event a KLEMM geothermal drill rig KR 805-3GW could be visited on a jobsite where it drilled 20 geothermal boreholes with a diameter of 152 mm to a depth of 170 meters.

Presently there are 50 geothermal drill rigs working in France. There shall be 175 rigs by 2033 and our sister company BAUER Machines France will be doing its utmost to make sure as many as possible are KLEMM rigs.
